Conquering the U.S. Open Mixed Doubles circuit in her most recent outing, Sania paired up with Bruno Soares giving Tennis fans across the globe an entertaining show that ended with the delightful sight of the duo kissing the silverware on Friday.
Matched against an unseeded pair of Abigail Spears and Santiago Gonzalez, the Indo-Brazilian pair of Sania and Bruno, won the U.S. Open Mixed Doubles crown, 6-1, 2-6, 11-9. With this win Sania, also became the first Indian sportswoman and only the third Indian after Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes to have won multiple Grand Slam titles. Prior to this she had won the Australian Open in 2009, and the French Open Mixed Doubles in 2012. Sharing the dais with Mahesh Bhupathi on both the occasions that saw her winning the prestigious Grand Slam titles, Sania dedicated her U.S. Open win to Bhupathi, presenting her mentor, this perfect gift on a perfect occasion- Teacher’s Day.
The first Indian to break into the top 5 in the WTA Doubles rankings, Sania’s tennis expedition started when she was just six.
